The Collaboration
Treehouse Shakers expanded Branching OUT, their LGBTQIA+ programming, and hired program manager, Cheyenne Mesura (they/them). Branching OUT was offered to the general public before expanding to include public schools through afterschool programming and in-school residencies throughout New York City. These residencies were for young people who identify as LGBTQIA+, or were seeking to become better allies. These classes also expanded into the Department of Education’ general curriculum for Pride month. Branching OUT centers on discovering and exploring one’s story and identity through an intentionally artist-led format. During their program, young people explored and reflected on their own story to create a larger, more meaningful experience, while gaining self-empowerment and gathering with like-minded peers. Through the guidance of teaching artists, young people created narratives that were turned into podcasts, dances, songs, or poetry. THS also commissioned Cheyenne to write and direct the play, “The Deepest Breath,” a coming out story based on the book by Meg Grehan. The play premiered in March of 2023 and continues to tour.
The Organization
Treehouse Shakers’ (THS) mission is to create original performances that encourage multi-generational audiences to experience greater connections to their community. Melding theater, dance, music and visual elements with a script, our repertoire includes 20 original works that explore narrative styles through universal themes addressing every age level within youth programming. Complementing performances, we also offer workshops, residencies and staff developments.
